Fieldtender Pay vs. Venmo & Zelle

Getting paid is the easy part.
The hard part is tax season.

Venmo and Zelle work fine for collecting money. The problem comes at year end — your bank statement shows a wall of transfers with no names, no job descriptions, and no way to tell income from reimbursements. Your bookkeeper spends hours reconstructing it. Or you do.

  • Fast to collect

  • Customer gets a receipt they can keep
  • You have a record of who paid, for what job

  • Works for customers who want to pay by card

What a peer-to-peer app costs you at tax time

Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App were built for splitting a dinner check, not running a trade business. When every job payment lands as a bare transfer, there is no line item tying it to a customer or a job. Come January, someone has to open the banking app, scroll months of history, and rebuild your books transaction by transaction.

That reconstruction is guesswork, and guesswork is where deductions get missed and income gets double-counted. A bookkeeper doing it by the hour is expensive. Doing it yourself on a Sunday is worse.

Why a real invoice matters

An invoice from Fieldtender Pay carries your business name, the service performed, the date, and the amount. Your customer gets a branded receipt they can file for their own records or expense to a landlord. You get a permanent entry — client, description, payment method — that your bookkeeper can reconcile without ever calling to ask “who is this $340 from?”

At month end, one click produces a report showing everything collected, broken out by card, cash, check, and bank transfer, plus every invoice still outstanding. Send it straight to your accountant from the app.

Chargebacks and disputes

Peer-to-peer transfers give you almost no recourse if a customer reverses a payment or claims they never sent it. Card payments through Fieldtender Pay run on Stripe, which handles fraud screening and the dispute process on your behalf. You are working from a documented invoice, not a screenshot of a chat.

Let your customer pay the way they want

Not every customer has Venmo, and plenty do not want to install anything to pay a contractor. A Fieldtender Pay link opens a standard card checkout in the browser — no app, no account, no friction. Card, and you can still record cash or check payments in one tap so every job stays on the books.

When Venmo or Zelle is still fine

If you send a handful of invoices a year, or you are paying back a buddy for materials, a peer-to-peer app is perfectly reasonable. Fieldtender Pay earns its keep once getting paid is a routine part of the work and clean records actually matter — which, for most field businesses, is right away.
